QA | Who was John Robert Powers? | John Robert Powers, an actor of the early 1900’s, was a dynamic influence in the entertainment industry. After learning of a need for attractive people to pose for magazine advertisements, JRP started his first modeling agency in 1923 in New York City. QA | I have heard that if you want to be a model, agencies will pay everything for you to start. Is this true? | | Almost never. In any career, training and marketing are an up-front investment of time and money. The most successful models, actors, and singers will tell you that the learning process never ends. In today’s fast-paced environment, very few agencies in the world will front the costs necessary to begin someone’s career - there are “discoveries”, but they are extremely rare. All professionals have to work for their success. You can compare it to a college education. Just because you want to become a lawyer doesn’t mean a law firm will pay for your learning expenses. You are expected to do it on your own with the hopes of one day getting a job. The same principal applies to modeling. | | | |
